Chapter 4: The Self and Interaction

SELF: our experiences of distinct, real, personal identity that is separate and different from all other people.
Leonardo is a turtle that is trying to be a teenager, but he is also a super hero. Him and his brothers can be proud of themselves because they help other in need. He also "loses" himself when he goes from teenage turtle to ninja turtle.

Chapter 6: Deviance

Tertiary Deviance: redefining the stigma associated with a deviant label as a positive phenomenon. pg. 160
Leonardo and his brothers are considered deviant because they go against the social norm of society. They have changed the way some people think however, because they try to help out the people of New York City. So in turn they have taken a deviant act and turned it into a tertiary deviant act by becoming social phenomenons!

Chapter 8: Race and Ethnicity as Lived Experiences

Minority Group: people who are recognized as belonging to a social category (here either a racial or an ethnic group) and who suffer from unequal as a result of that status. pg. 221-222
Leonardo is in what would be considered a minority group. He is treated differently because he is a turtle with human capabilities. People do to understand him so they treat him unequally. He and his brothers have to stay underground because people are scared of them. They are different so people do not treat them as equals.

Chapter 10: The Macro- Micro Link in Social Institutions

Simulacrum: an image or media representation that does not reflect reality in any meaningful way but is treated as real. pg. 291
The Ninja Turtles are made out to be terrible people, because sometimes when they help save people from evil, other things get destroyed. The media and citizens of New York think of them as evil themselves, but in reality they are they good guys! All they want to do is help keep the city safe from the real villains.

Chapter 13: Leisure and Media

Role Model: an individual who serves as an example for others to strive toward and emulate. pg. 391
I would say that if I needed a role model it would be Leonardo. He is a leader and tries to do everything to the best of his ability and do what is right for everyone in the city. He takes care of his brothers, master Splinter, April, and anyone that he can!
